Freedom of Choice [more]

Wow. First of all, I had no idea GE owned those companies, and those are some big companies they own. Secondly, it really is something to marvel over. Remember the late 1800s with their massive monopolies? I guess this as bad as then, since there are more than two companies in the industry, but just 6 companies controlling 90% of all media? Now that’s just insane.
I mean, it’s not bad. One could argue that consolidating media will help those individual channels grow and get more exposure, but still, no one wants to see corporations that get too big.
Just ask AT&T.

I live under a rock, so learning that these these 6 companies controlled so much was like OH WOAH. Forgive me I didn’t know Time and Warner Bros were under the same company….

Pretty much everything can be traced back to one company. Restaurants, fashion, just about anything you can think of. Pretty sad, no?

I disagree with you about this not being bad. This is very bad, this causes a lot problems for small businesses. Specifically small independent media businesses, it makes it impossible for media start ups to survive without being eaten up by one of these 6. These 6 also control what news we get, they get to shape the political field so it’s in their favor, they get to sue people for hundreds of thousands of dollars for downloading a single copy of their content.
There’s a reason we have antitrust laws. There’s a reason we passed laws in the 1800’s to prevent this and it was only recently in the 1990’s that the FCC loosened and passed laws making it easier for these companies to gobble up and suffocate smaller independent media companies.
These companies have stopped and banned films and musicians that go against it’s politics or has anything bad to say about the politicians it’s bought.
There hasn’t been a big new player in forever, why? Because these guys are preventing it.
This is dangerous, and we need to break these companies up. These are the guys who want to control what websites we can and cannot visit. They don’t want a start up to come in and provide real competition.
